Rough & CutVarneys Rough & Cut takes us to the opal mining town of Coober Pedy in Central Australia. In the summer, temperatures can reach 113 degrees, and so much of the town lives in underground dwellings called dugouts. A great deal of Varneys photographs are shot around dusk when the heat begins to subside and the sun casts a glow as iridescent and surreal as the Coober Pedy opals.
